Most of us experience times in our life when we feel insecure about ourselves and uncertain about the future. Typically, we look to someone we trust for feedback about our past decisions, our attitudes, our ideas and beliefs. However, in times of crisis, the focus on finding a solution can distract us from the task of looking inward for answers. In fact, we may even avoid self-exploration, for fear of being “blamed” for a problem we feel powerless to resolve.
Reality Check Counseling is a compassionate approach to identifying how a situation came to be and utilizing individual and family strengths to solve a problem and/or to resolve a traumatic experience.
Reality Check Counseling is based on an eclectic use of learning theory, solution focused counseling and cognitive behavioral trauma therapy. It is not for everyone. It tends to be brief, direct and intense but is also highly compassionate and empowering. Typically, people who do well are willing and able to accept feedback about their own role in the problems they face.
The information and advice provided on this website is very effective in helping people understand their own behaviors/choices and the consequences they bring– as well as providing insight into the behaviors and choices of other people.
The goal of Reality Check Counseling is to provide insight that will help you examine your own choices and determine whether or not the benefits outweigh the negative consequences. You will also receive support to help you explore ways to change undesirable behaviors. Some people experience this as very uncomfortable. In addition, I am very direct in confronting issues, and this may be stressful to people who are not truly committed to change.
